A confirmation class Bible In recent days, it's been harder and harder to find the "just right" translation of the scriptures. When I was asked to organize my church's confirmation class, I set out to find the translation that would work the best for kids who were trying to gain ownership of their faith. The NRSV did the trick, and this new edition from Harper is the best! It's durable enough to keep up with a caving trip, and very easy to read. The kids love it too. This bible comes with my fullest recommendation.
NRSV Standard Bible This hardback Bible has a smooth black and tan leather-like binding that feels very nice in the hand. The wood-cut pictures are very attractive and the print is larger than in most regular-print Bibles and of a very readable font. There are helpful subject headings. The Bible lies flat when open. The concordance in the back is helpful, but not exhaustive.
My one complaint is with the pages. The paper is quite thin, and the print can been seen through them, especially the book titles and wood-cut pictures, which are dark enough to obscure the print on the other side of the page. The outer edges of the pages also curl upward instead of lying flat, which makes turning to a particular passage difficult.
I am glad to see publishers finally trying to print decent looking NRSV Bibles. This one is an improvement over most, but could have been better with different paper and perhaps a soft, flexible cover instead of hardback.
Almost-perfect edition of a well-regarded version of the Bible This is an exquisite edition of the New Revised Standard Version of the Christian Scriptures, a scholarly translation which seeks to render the Bible in contemporary English. The paper is highest quality Bible-paper, and the print larger than most bibles of this size. The binding is both attractive and durable. Were it not for the less-than-optimal print darkness (it is a bit light on the thin paper), I would consider it a five-star offering. As it is, it is still the most appealing edition of this version I have seen.
Each book of the bible is set-off by a wood-cut design unique to that book. If you are looking for a good-quality, easy to read Protestant edition of this translation (the companion Harper Catholic NRSV is equally attractive, with the books ordered as in the Roman Catholic tradition), this is one to consider. (Buyers should know this is not a "study bible" editon, as it has no notes other than minor footnotes on textual variants. For a full study edition of this version, see either the HarperCollins Study Bible or the New Oxford Annotated Bible).
