 Fascinating and much needed approach to difficult subject
This book is an excellent introduction to world religions, as well as a timely book for lay readers considering the strife we witness in the world today. We all, regardless of our religious beliefs, need to take the time and make the effort to learn more about Hinduism, Buddism, Judaism, Christianily, Islam and others, thereby learning to respect forms of practicing faith other than our own. This book is ideal for people who want to take the first step into understanding the histories and practices of various religions. It was fascinating to see the parallels and differences. I did get confused a time or two, but rereading at those times was all I needed. The book, at 137 pages, is concise, but you'll be surprised how much knowledge is packed into those pages. I was impressed with the objectiveness of the author, though he shares in the first few pages his own spiritual background. You learn about these religions in a truly unbiased way, which is critical to not only learning about, but accepting them as relevant as your own.
Great Primer
This book is actually very good. Deming clearly outlines key issues in the field of religious studies. I will be using it in my intro level classes to better help my students understand religion in a pluralistic, postmodern world.
The only issue I really have is that Deming may be too concise; in other words, I wish the text had more meat.
