Customer comments on this selection.
A very liberal and PC study Bible The Bible commentaries are written from a decidedly liberal theological perspective. It is obvious that the authors believe the Bible is just a product of ancient myths and storytelling. They disbelieve miracles and explain away prophecy by assigning late dates for the books. Their notes are not balanced and really do not present opposing points of view or evidence to the contrary. More a work of anti-Christian/anti-Jewish propaganda than a balanced, scholarly work. Also, while it is not a bad translation, the NRSV does have some gender-neutrality inserted into it. All in all, I cannot recommend this study Bible. It reads like skeptics and non-believers wrote it. Instead, I would recommend the NIV Study Bible or NKJV Study Bible.
One Great Bible! If you want to do serious Bible study, this is the Bible for you. It is published by Oxford University Press, so the quality is the highest -- beautiful leather cover, gorgeous gold leafing on the page edges, excellent quality Bible paper, and two ribbon markers stitched into the binding. It is published in the New Revised Standard Version, which is a little too "gender-neutral" for my taste, but the other features more than offset that. Besides, the NRSV is the official version of our church, is a literal translation, and is very readable in most places.
I bought the edition with the Apocrypha, but an edition is available without the Apocrypha for those who just want the canonical books. Both editions have well-written introductions to the various groupings of books (e.g. The Hebrew Bible/The Pentateuch, The Historical Books, The Poetical and Wisdom Books, etc.) as well as for each individual book. There are also essays on The Canons of the Bible, Textual Criticism, Translation of the Bible into English, etc., as well as a great map section.
All in all, this is probably the Rolls Royce of study Bibles. If you are a dispensationalist, you would probably prefer the Scofield Study Bible (see my review). Otherwise, I highly recommend this Bible.
A Scholarly Standard I bought this bible b/c I needed a good study Bible with world- class scholarship behind the notes and supplementary materials, and it has delivered! While one might not necessarily agree with or value 'higher' critical accounts of the Biblical record, they can surely value the socio-cultural insights provided. The extra maps in this edition are great too, aiding visualization of these ancient times and places. Overall an A+!
Best Bible I Own This is the best bible i have yet to own. The bibnding and leather are great, the text is a wonderful size, and is glorious due to the addition of the Apocrypha. The notes are the best of any Bible I have ever seen. They reference knowledge and scholars outside of simple Christian thought. The notes as well as the translation are enhanced due to the ecumenical influence. No other Bible refernces such ancient texts such as the "Epic of Gilgamesh" or the "Enuma Elish" in their study or annotation notes. Not only does it provide scholarly anceint knowledge of the geography or other topics, it also provides a practical side to each scripture. Great for in-depth study and research. The best bible translation since it takes advantage of the Dead sea Scrolls, which no other translation really does. Most recomended by professors and scholars in modern schools. These notes are wonderful, and challenging, but the best around. Highly recomend this bible, best purchase you can make.
