Religious The uses and meaning of the Mellah (Jewish quarter) of Marrakech
In "The Mellah of Marrakesh," Emily Gottreich explains the origins of Marrakech's mellah (Jewish quarter), who lived there and why, what life was like there, what business activities took place there, how Muslims viewed and used the mellah, and how mellah-dwelling Jews viewed and used the Muslim city.

It is a slender book (only 137 pages before the endnotes, bibliography, and index), and it reads fairly quickly. A helpful assortment of maps and an interesting collection of photographs enhances the volume. My only objection is that the author sometimes employs a bit too much academic or theory-informed jargon. Concepts that could be explained using a few more words and using simpler expressions are cumbersome here (at least for the non-professorial reader). Of course, this should be no surprise since the book seems intended for an academic audience and is based upon Gottreich's doctoral dissertation (Harvard University, 1999).

It is an interesting book and will prove useful for college-level classes on Middle Eastern history (esp. Moroccan history), urban studies, or Jewish history (esp. those focusing on Jews of the Middle East or on Jewish-Muslim relations). I would also definitely recommend it for a well-educated traveler in advance of a trip to Morocco.
