Great study guide I got this for my Granddaughter and she really enjoys it It helps to understand a lot better.
Worth having This bible is good for study in my opinion. It combines the literal word for word and paraphrase thought for thought translation methods in the KJV, NASB, NIV, and NLT. It has the footnotes of all the translations also which is very useful! All of the footnotes together provide useful information about other manuscripts and ancient translations (like the LXX), more literal renderings of the text and alternate readings. The only thing missing in the bible I would have liked is cross references. But hey get Treasury of Scripture Knowledge if you want those and you'll get plenty. A concordance would be nice too but this book is large enough.
Problems: A few factors make this book hard to read. The font size is small, the choice of font could have been better (looks like Times New Roman), and the print shows through the page from the other side very often. A less narrow font style might have helped a lot. As it is now I cannot read this book for very long without a magnifier without my eyes hurting. I'm 23 and have reasonably good vision.
I prefer the NLT to the Amplified version in the Comparative Study Bible. The Amplified seems excessively interpretive in spots though it places the interpretive statements mostly in the brackets. And yes, literal is not always accurate. There is information in the original languages that can never come out in a word for word translation. However this is at the cost of some opinion perhaps being thrown in by the translators. That's why you have literal and paraphrase translations together in a bible such as this so you can catch that! Don't stick to just one translation when seeking a knowledge of what the Bible actually says in the original languages.
"...in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." KJV
"...many advisors make victory sure." NIV
"...with many counselors, there is safety." NLT
"...in abundance of counselors there is victory [footnote: LITERALLY deliverance]." NASB
-Proverbs 11:14
Great, But Not Quite Today's This is probably the best parallel Bible out there. My only complaint is that it was not updated to include the 2nd edition of the New Living Translation.
Very pleased This is an excellent parallel Bible, I received it on time, and I'm happy with my purchase.
One small annoyance I think this is the perfect combination for me. In my church circles, the NIV is the default text. The KJV is classic and a helpful reference. NASB is more literal and helpful as well. And finally, the NLT is my favorite for devotionals and casual reading.
My only gripe is small but unforgivable. Each page ends when one of the translations run out of room (or when a book/chapter ends). But often, the passage ends mid-sentence (or even mid-word), and the rest of the translations follow suit. But there is no guarantee that all the passages end at exactly the same word, and often a key word is at the end of one page, but at the beginning of the next page in a different translation. Sometimes one translation ends in the middle of, say, verse 17, while another translation ends in the middle of verse 18. This is extremely annoying when it occurs (often), and would have been so simple to avoid with a little forethought.
(Example for current users: 1 Peter 1:17.)
