Religious Truth.
1. This is not the most literal translation of the Bible. That honor belongs to the NASB.

2. The NIV does use the most ancient and reliable manuscripts to translate from to ensure integrity and accuracy.

3. Its style of translation is a thought-for-thought type, which may not be completely literal, but very accurately represents the author-intended Greek and Hebrew message of each verse.

4. I wouldn't recommend this translation for intensive study, but would highly recommend it for devotional/personal use and group/congregational use.

Religious It's a Bible -- What else do you want to know?
It's your basic NIV hardcover Bible. It is exactly what you would imagine.

Religious Too Much Controversy - Caveat Emptor
I have been a Bible student since childhood, and that's alot of years. During this time I have been able to use, and compare at least 4 different translations of the Bible. Although I studied and examined the Holy Scriptures extensively for many years, it occurred to me that I had never actually sat down and read the Bible from cover to cover. Recently I determined to read God's Word from cover to cover for the first time in my life, and not to build my faith, but for the simple pleasure of reading it, no agenda to promote, just to read it for the enjoyment of it.

So I started looking for a translation that was easy to read, contemporary with modern day language structure, and relatively accurate where it counts.

At first I considered the NIV and found it to be a wonderfully smooth and effortless reading experience. Initially I was impressed with how nicely the NIV has been put together. I found more than a few biased descrepancies on doctrinal fine points that seemed to serve the interests of the translators. However, being comfortable in my beliefs and my understanding of God's message, these were easily overlooked. I found the structure and composition of the publication to be helpful and positive. Overall, the NIV is a very nicely put together publication.

Ultimately, I chose a different translation that was, in my opinion, more accurate and faithful to the original texts and manuscripts, and yet still wonderfully comfortable to read and understand, much more so than the more literally translated modern day versions that are available for more intensive study.

The upshot is this. I have read through all of the review postings on this publication and it appears to have devolved more into a forum of people wishing to debate their differences in beliefs, rather than a constructive review of the product. At the very least, there seems to be much controversy revolving around this translation of the Bible.

The fact that there are so many conflicting points of view regarding the various features of the NIV indicates to me that perhaps this publication is itself controversial by nature. Based upon my own examination, and the comments of others, it would also seem that the flavor of the text and some carefully worded passages might likely serve the purpose of the translator's points of view, as surely as Catholic versions of the Bible and the KJV serve theirs. All at the expense of truth and accuracy.

If you are looking for a nicely written, smoothly worded, modern day translation of the Bible, the NIV should do nicely for you. It's very comfortable and pleasant to read, and the impact of "true" Christianity will shine through for you in a way that will surely improve your life.

But if you're looking for an accurate study guide upon which to base your new-found faith, you may wish to avoid controversial publications and seek out a translation that speaks for itself, and not for the agenda of the translation committee who put it together. "Caveat Emptor"

Religious Good for readability, not easy for study
The New International Version is excellent for readability and overall quality. However, because it is only 52% consistent with the original language (Old Testament comparison only) you cannot do serious bible study without using a concordance or bible software.
