"Zen - The Religion of the Samurai" is an extraordinary book. It was written nearly 100 years ago (1913) by a Japanese scholar for his American friends; to help them understand the nature of Bushido, the Japanese code of honor that had figured prominently in the astounding success of the Japanese against the Russians in the, then recent, Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5.
The history of Zen in the book is detailed minutely, but the tales, the examples, of Buddhist practice are marvelously succinct. After the initial history, the stories are used to illustrate various points that would otherwise be difficult to explain. They show the developmental stages of Zen as it evolved into a separate philosophy from mainstream Buddhism to a unique sect that was perfectly suited to the character of the Japanese at that time in history.
As an extra little bonus, this edition contains 18 or so illustrations interspersed throughout the text. Some are photos of various Buddha statues. A few are simply little design elements that fill what would otherwise be white space at the end of a section. Most are full page illustrations of strikingly beautiful Japanese art.
