 Religion's suppression of Women
Gender and Religion is a well researched, well written, and convincing book that makes the premise that the major world religions are sexists and then attempts to explain how they arrived at their predicament. Whether you accept or reject Doctor Crandall's logic, you must agree that this is a crafted work by an author that has extensive research and understands the topic.
Being a white, middle class male who has little interested in religion or the feminist movement, who was accidentally introduced to this work; the book was an "eye opener". Besides being forced to re evaluate traditional dogma that I had assumed was "written in stone", I was introduced to new concepts that may help me to better evaluate the present.
For anyone who desires information on how we got here and why we have some of the present problems; I recommend this book without reservation.
A Book I Wish I'd Had When I Was Young
Some things are slow in coming. Not that there are not books that would have helped me be the woman I am today out there, but how I wish I had this one when I was twenty.
"Gender & Religion" is a no-nonsense book with content that mirrors its title and it's premise--that religion is at least in part responsible for the plight of women the world over--is not new. The thing is, this book examines the history of women within the history of the great religions of the world, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

The author, Barbara Crandall, M.D., is a woman of conviction but she has an academic background which gives this book a measured viewpoint and therfore makes it one that a reader can trust. It should be required reading in every university women's studies program in the nation and others everywhere should tuck it under the pillow of their daughters on, say, their 18th birthdays.
