Concise Executive Summary of Historicity of Christianity as Truth As an apologetics fan and reader, I devoured this pithy little book. Parton treats the reader to a tribute to his mentor/friend J.W. Montgomery on his apologetic trajectories of historicity and logical incompatibility of Christianity with the other religion challengers. He achieves this successfully by pulling together bits and pieces of apologetic writings of Montgomery and others (my library must be pretty similar to what's footnoted here and they are excellent).
Parton's legal training and experience evidences itself in his cogent and logical organized presentation. Beginning with the statement that each person has a religion, a worldview, he then proceeds to vector along Montgomery's magnificent logic in his Tractatus Logico-Theologicus that the only compatibility the world religions have is that they are incompatible. From this he dives into asking if any of them are true and how one would determine such. Here is an excellent section which examines common sense, intuition, experience and authority as potential truth discerners. His conclusion of what is historical and do we ever reach 100% certainity in its examination fits. As he proclaims: "a trial in court of law is really a recreation of history." Adding to the important judicial setting he adds science and medicine as exemplary. This is strong case which average person can relate to.
Thus the question begs answering: has God entered human history? Where does the best, credible, lacking cross-examination to prove otherwise, evidence lead us? This defense shows the history overwhelming answers yes in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His conclusions showing its influence in advancing the best in culture is persuasive, especially his comments on evil and suffering.
This is one to devour. If the reader hasn't read his references, by all means I recommend it. Many of them grace my shelves and are my allies as well. They will stimulate you to further investigation, study and dialogue. I certainly hope this author continues to share his apologetic explorations with us in book form. Due to the concise summary of many salient, powerful arguments one finds in these 96 pages, this is easily one I can and will recommend.
