Great Book Quick. It was just like new and it got here in no time. Great service!!!
Great for novices like me I've been listening to Tracie Hotchner's Dog Talk show on our local public radio station with much interest for the last few years, and this was as a non-dog owner! Particularly with all the stories you hear about the pet recall and overweight dogs (hello: anyone ever think there's a link to the obesity in people in this country as well?!), I found her views and suggestions, and that of her panel's, refreshing and informative.
So when I finally broke down after years of begging by my husband and child to get a dog, which we'll be adopting in less than a month now, I became obsessed with trying to educate myself as best as possible through the internet and other means, and the first book I ordered was this one, which I am still in the middle of going through. It is THICK with pages and pages of really great information. It reminds me of when I first had our baby, and how panicked I felt wondering if I was going to be a good mom; the book I turned to then was "The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby" which I used shamelessly almost like a manual (I didn't have any relatives around to ask simple questions like 'How do I change the diaper?'). Well, "The Book Bible" sort of reminds me of that, but even better!
This is not like the days when, as a child in the 70s, we had a female mutt which we picked up as a stray who later gave us a litter, which we kept 2 puppies from. All the things we did to train (and not train), nutrition (or lack of), everything practically was without the information that in retrospect could have served us so well back then, going with what was conventional wisdom of the times and just a little ignorant. Reading this book helps me recognize a lot of problems we had and where we must have gone wrong. Now I feel like at least I'm going in with a little more knowledge.
True, a lot of it is going to go beyond this or any book where only experience and time will show me things, and will have a lot to do with the personality of the dog and how he will mesh with our familly and home. No doubt I'll make mistakes along the way, but The Dog Bible helps to gives me the confidence to make me feel that I'm going to at least try to do the little guy right from the beginning.
One of the best, if not the best Dogspeak Translation Guides.... There is so much we would not have known if we did not have this book. We recommend (if possible) that you get the book long before you get the puppy or dog as it will let you know how to get your mind and home ready for a dog and what you should prepare yourself for. Having read the book was helpful when we picked out our dog because we learned how to vet breeders in a way that we would never have known to do otherwise. You see a cute puppy and you think that puppy is so cute, I want to take it home. But that puppy has been bred with traits you may not even be aware of and which will not manifest until it is older. Cute or not, a puppy is only a potential. Also, it is important to understand what puppies' behaviors mean and how they learn from their human "parents". It is important to know how to react to them so they learn how to interact with you appropriately.
The book is comprehensive and very useful and covers all matters to do with dogs. We still refer it from time to time even though our "baby" is almost 2 years old. She has grown into a good citizen and I think having this book helped us to make the most of our relationship with her for our benefit and for hers.
Thank-you Tracie!!! Woof!!! We love this book! It is truly a necessary resource book for everything dog. It should be given to everyone who is a dog owner or is thinking of becoming one. Easy to read and understand, too. I gave a copy to my petsitter and she is recommending it to all of her clients as well. Great book!!!
A Must Have Have for Any Dog Lover! As a child, I grew up in a household that always had dogs. However, growing up with dogs and having one of your own is a completely different story! After recently getting a puppy, I found I was calling home almost every day with questions for my parents about my pup's progression until I heard about this book. The Dog Bible is fantastic!! It has solutions or recommendations for almost any dog related question you can throw at it. I've been pleasantly surprised that whenever I've gone seeking an answer, the book has magically had it- it's like it reads my mind! While I was skeptical at first, as most dog books tend to be for the uber-beginner, this book is written with even an experienced handler in mind. It has great advice for both city and dogs that live in the suburbs. All in all, this is must-have for any one with a dog!
